Men's Tennis Defeats UTRGV, Moves to 6-2

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (6-2) played a solid doubles point and transferred the momentum into singles in a 5-2 victory over the UTRGV Vaqueros (3-8) on Sunday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.

STRONG START
Misha Fomenkov and Johannes Klein kept their unblemished record in doubles as they started the day by overpowering their flight three opponent 6-1. With one match already in hand, Austin Vos and Mats Westkamp finished the job at flight one.

The duo moved to four wins on the season as a team as they took a 6-4 decision to give the Privateers the first point.

SINGLES
The momentum carried over to singles as three quick decisions gave the Privateers the match. First it was Vos who overpowered his opponent in a quick 6-3, 6-2 decision to move to 3-0 in singles on the season.

Then it was Westkamp who only dropped two games in his match on the way to a 6-0, 6-2 win at flight one. With the win, Westkamp is now 6-1 in singles play, all at flight one.

Fomenkov acquired a service break and made it hold through the set for a 6-4 score. He took over the second set, winning it 6-1 to give the Privateers the win.

THREE SETS
With the match decided, the others went to three sets. Espen Lagarde came back from conceding a late break and the second set to move ahead 7-3 early in his tiebreak. Lagarde finished the tiebreak with a 10-6 result.

UTRGV won matches at flight two and four, both in three sets.

FROM COACH KANGA
"The doubles point is always huge and we capitalized on it. The momentum then carried over and Mats was methodical. Misha and Austin played really well and Espen came through for us in the third set."

"This team is capable of doing a lot of things and I think they're very talented. We'll get ready for Northern Illinois on Tuesday.

NEXT UP
The Privateers' match against Northern Illinois is set for 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the University Tennis Center.
