Privateers Score Five in Eighth Inning, Pull Away From Southern

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (11-6) got out of an eighth inning jam and put up a five-spot in the bottom half of an 11-5 win over the Southern Jaguars (6-10) on Wednesday evening at Maestri Field.

WIN-LOSS
Cristian Poche (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Privateers. Larry Barabino (2-1) was tagged with the loss.

HOLDING THEM OFF
The Privateers pitched out of a couple of tough spots in the latter innings. None was bigger than in the top of the eighth when Southern had the tying run on third. Lamkin was called upon and he induced a line out off the bat of Zavier Moore to keep the Privateers in front.

INSURANCE
New Orleans added five runs to the lead in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach. Gaige Howard led off with a single and was driven in three batters later on a Beau Bratton RBI double. Salo Iza provided another big hit with a triple that scored two more runs.

EARLY CONTROL
Cortlynn Ramirez didn't allow a hit through the first four innings as he kept the Jaguars bats quiet while the Privateer offense went to work early. New Orleans picked up a run aided by two Southern errors. An RBI single by Beau Bratton plated the first run of the game.

The Privateers added two more in the second inning. Jamarian Crain blasted a triple to deep left-center to score Darren Willis. Later in the inning, Crain scored on one of five Southern wild pitches on the evening.

STATISTICAL LEADERS
Luther Woullard was one of four Privateers with two hits on the night. Iza was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two RBI. Gaige was 2-for-4 with two runs and two walks. Bratton also collected two hits in five at-bats.

Antonio Gauthier hit a solo homer in the seventh, his first of the season, and ninth of his career. Seven of the nine Privateer starters scored a run in the victory.

NEXT UP
The Privateers will host a three-game series against Northwestern State starting on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
