NEW ORLEANS –
Haden Erbe and
Caleb Seroski combined for 19 strikeouts as the New Orleans Privateers (12-11, 7-4) won the second game of the doubleheader 8-4 over the Abilene Christian Wildcats (14-8, 6-5).
The 19 strikeouts tied the most recorded by a Southland school this season. It was also tied for the ninth most recorded by any Division I team in the nation this season.
STRIKEOUTS A PLENTY
Erbe started the night with five consecutive strikeouts in his 4.2 innings of work. He threw 53 of his 79 pitches for strikes.
Seroski took over and struck out the first batter he faced when he caught Brett Hammit looking to end the fifth. In his 4.1 innings, Seroski only allowed one hit and two walks. Only one runner got into scoring position for the remainder of the night.
Seroski put the finishing touches on his fourth win of the season when he struck out Mitchell Dickson. 14 of the 19 strikeouts were swinging.
RALLY TIME
The Privateers came back from down 4-0, a rally that started with a three-run fifth. New Orleans loaded the bases with one out and
Luther Woullard lined a single to bring in the first run. Another run scored on a wild pitch and
KC Simonich's sac fly brought the Privateers within one.
An inning later,
Jackson Murphy scored the tying run when he came home on an RBI by
Kasten Furr. A high bouncer to the left side scored Murphy from third and Furr reached on one of three Abilene Christian errors.
The Privateers moved ahead for keeps in the seventh. After the first two men of the inning reached,
Salo Iza put down a sac bunt to move runners to second and third. Simonich came up again and ripped a double to right that scored the winning runs.
WILDCATS TAKE WILD FIRST GAME
Abilene Christian won the first game 19-10 in a contest that saw several wild swings of momentum.
The Privateers scored eight runs in the first two innings including a grand slam by Howard, which was the first by a Privateer since Apr. 2019.
However, Abilene Christian went ahead for good on the strength of a seven-run fourth inning. Hammit's grand slam moved the Wildcats in front, one of five homers on the day.
NOTES
-
Travis Gober hit his first collegiate homer, an opposite field shot in the first inning of the first game.
-Josh Cerejo threw two scoreless innings in the front end of the doubleheader.
-Pearce was 4-for-8 on the day with five RBI and four runs scored. Woullard collected five hits in eight at-bats.
