LAKE CHARLES, La. – The New Orleans Privateers made a belated rally with four runs in the ninth but they fell on the short end of an 8-6 decision to the McNeese Cowboys on Friday evening at Joe Miller Ballpark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning but could not capitalize on a couple of opportunities. With runners on second and third and one out, McNeese's Hunter Reeves was able to get the next two batters to hold the score where it was.
McNeese jumped ahead with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Then in the seventh, the Privateers loaded the bases with one out. That's when Cameron Foster came in and struck out the next two batters. After that point, the Cowboys pulled away with five runs over the next two frames.
There was still one more response by the Privateers. A late surge was started when
Beau Bratton drew a leadoff walk. After a single by
Darren Willis and an ensuing error, the run train started. The big hit was a two-run triple by
Pearce Howard to deep center. However, Foster ended matters with a strikeout to preserve his third save of the year.
EARLY STAGES
Haden Erbe got the start and was racking up the strikeouts early. He recorded 10 in six innings but the Cowboys struck first on a safety squeeze from Ben David that scored Nate Collins.
The Privateers got their first two runs when
Salo Iza reached on a single and
Hudson LaBorde drew a walk. A sac fly by
Darren Willis drove in the first run and LaBorde came home later on a wild pitch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Furr went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run. LaBorde, Bratton and Willis each scored a run.
Luther Woullard went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
NEXT UP
The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
