Turpin Turns in Game One Shutout, Privateers Split Doubleheader

BEAUMONT, TexasChris Turpin pitched his sixth complete game of the season to lead the New Orleans Privateers to a 2-0 win in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader against the Lamar Cardinals. The Cardinals scored a 3-2 win on a walk-off in the ninth inning of the second game.

GAME ONE
Turpin threw another gem and now has back-to-back shutouts on his season line. The senior moved his record to 9-2 after a 79-pitch, seven-inning complete game. He got around a first and third situation with one out in the third and only allowed one other runner into scoring position for the contest.

The offense punched across a single run in the third and fourth inning. Blake Way led off the third inning with a single and was brought home on a Gaige Howard sac fly.

An inning later, Luther Woullard singled and KC Simonich doubled down the third base line. That set the stage for Salo Iza who scored Woullard on an RBI ground out to make the score 2-0 where it would hold for the rest of the game.

Zach Bravo took the loss but also threw a complete game with two runs on seven hits allowed in seven innings.

GAME TWO
A low scoring game came down to a bases loaded situation with one out and Cole Girouard singled to bring in the winning run of a 3-2 Lamar victory.

Brandon Mitchell started and threw six shutout innings to set the tone. New Orleans punched a run through in the top of the sixth when Darren Willis doubled and was driven home by an RBI ground out from Gaige two batters later.

However, Lamar came back for two runs in the seventh to get ahead. A two-out error extended the inning and Logan Lejeune doubled to score a pair of runs.

Gaige singled off Lamar closer, Jack Dallas for the third hit of the eighth inning to tie the game back up at 2-2.

In the ninth, Anthony Quirion doubled to lead off the frame. After a sacrifice bunt, the bases were loaded on back-to-back intentional walks. Girouard singled into shallow right to score the winning run for Lamar and split the day.

Woullard had four hits between both games. Mitchell threw 6.2 innings and did not allow an earned run in 90 pitches.
