Privateers Suffer Heartbreaking Season Ending Loss to Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. – A 2021 season that produced so many moments came to an end on Friday as the Southeastern Lions rallied back for a 15-13 victory to eliminate the New Orleans Privateers from the Southland Tournament. New Orleans' record finishes at 29-28.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers were ahead from the bottom of the first until the top of the ninth and led by as many as nine. However, the Lions kept chipping away with four runs all scoring with two outs in the sixth. After a two-run eighth cut the New Orleans lead to 13-9, the Lions saved their best for last.

The first two batters reached and that set up back-to-back RBI singles from Gaby Cruz and Evan Keller that cut the lead to two. A sac bunt moved both runners up and an RBI groundout brought the New Orleans lead down to a run.

After a walk, Jacob Burke took a 2-0 pitch over the fence for his second homer of the game to give the Lions a 15-13 lead. Trey Shaffer then came in and retired the side in order to preserve the win.

EARLY FIREWORKS
After Southeastern got ahead 3-0 through a half inning, the Privateers chased starter, Will Kinzeler with a five-run response in the bottom of the frame. Luther Woullard cleared the bases with a double and Beau Bratton followed with a two-run homer to give New Orleans a 5-3 lead after one.

Starter, Haden Erbe did not allow a run over the next 4.2 innings and the Privateers continued to stretch their lead on the strength of three more home runs. Blake Way had two solo homers and Pearce Howard connected for the fourth grand slam by a Privateer in the tournament to help push New Orleans to a 12-3 lead.
