Privateers Fall to Southeastern in Tough Road Contest

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Lady Lions (18-6, 8-4) remained undefeated at home after defeating the New Orleans Privateers (13-11, 7-5) by a score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) on Thursday evening at the University Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Southeastern built an early 8-3 lead in the opening set to establish the early tone in their favor. While the Privateers immediately threatened to climb back, cutting the deficit to two on a couple of occasions, the Lady Lions held firm while hitting .289. Southeastern also had a 17-11 advantage in the kill department.
 
New Orleans started off the second set strong and both teams hit very efficiently. However, it was the Lady Lions who persevered from a tight score line late. They finished by notching five of the last seven points to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Privateers hit .345 in the set with 12 kills and just two errors in 29 attempts. Southeastern though, recorded a .469 attack percentage (17 kills, two errors, 32 attempts).
 
In the third set, Southeastern opened a pivotal three-point lead with a 4-1 spurt. Ahead 13-10, the Lady Lions looked poised to close out the match in their favor and that they did by gaining a 14-8 advantage in the kill department. They also committed four fewer errors on the set.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Trinity Jackson had nine kills to lead the Privateer offense. Kristi Gomez, Chandler Lee and Mauri Carver each added six kills. Sheilah Purcell led the way in digs with 20. Gomez, Kamryn Scroggins and Carver combined for seven of the team's eight service aces.
 
Southeastern hit .328 for the match and was led in kills by Kailin Newsome (16). Ryley Boyne also finished in double figures with 10 kills.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers will return home on Saturday to face McNeese. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
