Privateers Set Tone Early in Sweep Over Lamar

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (11-8, 5-2) posted 10 blocks on the day and hit .481 in the opening set of a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-16) win over the Lamar Cardinals (6-12, 0-7) on Saturday afternoon at the HPC.
 
The Privateers have now pushed their record to 7-0 at home with their 20th ever victory against the Cardinals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans turned the tide on the first two matches that went to Lamar in non-conference play. It was a highly efficient start to the match that helped vault the Privateers to an early lead. New Orleans scored the first five points of the set and never trailed.
 
14 kills in 27 attempts with just one error (.481 attack percentage) helped set the tone for a demonstrative showing in the third meeting against Lamar.
 
The block touches in the first set turned into block results over the next two sets. New Orleans had nine of their 10 total blocks in the last two sets. The sideout percentage was also at 70 or better in the first and third sets for New Orleans.
 
Trailing 8-5 in the second set, Sydney Gott had one of her three solo and six total blocks to help spring a 6-0 run that put the Privateers ahead for good in the set. New Orleans also had 21 digs in the final set and 49 (16.3 per set) for the match.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Kristi Gomez posted her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs. Gott posted six kills in 10 attempts along with her season-best block total. Chandler Lee finished with seven kills while Sophia Ewalefo added nine kills and nine digs. Sheilah Purcell led the way in digs with 14.
 
Splitting the setting duties for a second consecutive match, Claire Turner had 17 assists while Maite Solabarrieta finished with 13 assists.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers will have the return trip to Lamar on Thursday, Oct. 13 in Beaumont. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
