NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (14-14, 8-8) staged a comeback from down two sets but it fell just short in a 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 25-23) loss to the Northwestern State Demons (15-13, 8-8) on Saturday at the Human Performance Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 2-0, the Privateers staged a stellar third set. New Orleans began the set with an 8-3 run and never looked back. The Privateers had a 19-9 advantage in the kill department and hit .375 while Northwestern State was limited to a .125 attack percentage.
In set four, New Orleans grabbed a 12-8 lead. After a timeout, the Demons engineered a mini run of 4-1 which closed the gap to one point.
With the score tied at 21-21, Breanna Burrell came up with two big kills including one on a tip.
Sophia Ewalefo and
Chandler Lee both had kills to close the lead to one but Reaghan Thompson closed out the proceedings with her 11
th kill of the afternoon.
Northwestern State got to set point at 24-16 but the Privateers staved off four consecutive set point opportunities. However, the Demons closed it out on an attack error. The Demons then held New Orleans to an .091 attack percentage in set two.
With the win, Northwestern State moves into a tie for fifth with New Orleans and now has the tiebreaker for seeding over the Privateers.
INSIDE THE BOX
Trinity Jackson had a second consecutive double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs.
Chandler Lee co-led the squad in kills with 14.
Mauri Carver (13) and
Sophia Ewalefo (11) were also in double figures in kills on the day.
Sheilah Purcell finished with 22 digs, updating her career total to 963.
Kamryn Scroggins finished with 30 assists and 16 digs.
Sydney Gott had seven kills in 10 swings and was in on three total blocks (one solo, two assist).
