Privateers Fall in Heartbreaking Overtime Loss at Hofstra

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – The New Orleans Privateers (1-8) forced 38 turnovers but it wasn't enough to overcome the Hofstra Pride (6-5) in a 64-60 overtime loss at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Wednesday.

Down for most of the contest, the Privateers battled relentlessly. They trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter but stifling defense at several points helped New Orleans get back in it.

DeArica Pryor scored eight points in a span of three minutes to cut the Hofstra lead to one. After a stop, New Orleans got the ball back and Kyla Davis hit a three from the wing to give New Orleans a 51-49 advantage with 22 seconds remaining.

The Pride were trailing 52-50 when Brandy Thomas was fouled with nine seconds left. She hit both free throws to send the game into overtime.

Hofstra opened with a 6-0 run in the first 2:10 of the overtime period. New Orleans fought back to cut the Pride lead to two with nine seconds left on a Brianna Ellis jumper.

However, Jada Peacock, who hadn't previously scored all night, got fouled and hit two clutch free throws to seal the win for Hofstra.

The Privateers came out with lockdown defense in the opening stanza. They held Hofstra to just seven field goal attempts and forced 12 turnovers. However, the Pride kept themselves in it by holding the Privateers to 35 percent from the field.

After a quarter, New Orleans led 10-5. The second quarter was a different story as the Pride scored at all levels. The Pride put up 24 points and were 9-of-11 from the field. They also held a rebounding advantage of five in the quarter and went to the locker room up 29-21.
