NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team got conference play out to a tremendous start with a 7-0 win against the McNeese Cowgirls on Saturday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers were relentless from the outset as they swept every match starting with doubles.
Lina Hohnhold and
Salma Abdelrahim combined for a 6-1 victory at flight one to put the Privateers on the brink of clinching the doubles point.
Mar Gendra and
Lea Alguacil remained undefeated when paired together as they scored a 6-2 victory at flight three. The Privateers were also up 5-2 at flight two with
Ank Vullings and
Estelle Vanthier when the point was secured.
Singles play passed with five of the six matches going in straight sets. Hohnhold made her singles return and only gave up one game at flight two.
Vanthier followed up that feat with a strong run of her own to a flight four victory by a 6-1, 6-0 score. Vullings, Gendra and Alguacil all won their matches without conceding more than three games.
The one match that was extended to three sets happened at flight four. Abdelrahim lost the first set but came back to win a tiebreak in the second. She then dominated the 10-point tiebreak 10-3 to give the Privateers a win in their opening Southland tilt.
FROM COACH KANGA
"This was a great win. From the beginning they played with a high level of focus and intensity. These ladies should be proud of themselves and how they executed their gameplan."
