NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team battled to the end but were narrowly defeated 4-3 by the Northwestern State Lady Demons on Saturday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Demons held early control by securing the all-important doubles point to start the day. Viktorie Wojcikova and Rozalie Dohnalova engineered a flight two victory by a 6-1 score. Following closely behind were Mariella Minetti and Tjasa Klevisar who notched a 6-3 victory at flight one doubles.
In singles, the Privateers battled back a couple of times.
Lea Alguacil dominated at flight six to put the Privateers on the board. She only lost one game in a straight set victory.
Ank Vullings put together a strong performance at flight one to give the Privateers their first lead of the day. Vullings handled Dohnalova while not conceding a game in the second set of a 6-3, 6-0 win.
However, Northwestern State strung together the next three points at flights three, four and five to win the match. Minetti scored a crucial third set by a double break and rallied back from a set down to win 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
With the match clinched,
Lina Hohnhold secured the final point of the day for the Privateers. She outlasted Klevisar in a marathon match by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
FROM COACH KANGA
