Women's Tennis Loses Hard Fought Match vs. North Texas

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (8-7) got two points in singles but were defeated 5-2 by the North Texas Mean Green (9-7) on Sunday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The day started with a winning performance in doubles by the visitors. Saki Oyama and Liisa Vehvilainen got ahead early and won 6-3 at flight two. Then Jasmine Adams and Sophia Hummel secured a late service break to score a 7-5 victory at flight five.

The match at flight one doubles was carried into a tiebreak when the first point was decided.

In singles, proceedings started when Lucie Devier won in straight sets at 6-3, 6-3 to give the Mean Green a 2-0 lead.

Lina Hohnhold responded to put New Orleans on the board when she controlled matters throughout in a 6-1, 6-3 win against Adams at flight two.

After Vehvilainen won in straight sets at flight three, the Privateers again responded this time with Salma Abdelrahim. At flight five, Abdelrahim outlasted Kexuan Zhou in a tiebreak in the first set then went on to win the third set to cut the North Texas lead to 3-2.

However, Maria Ponomareva finished matters off for North Texas when she rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Oyama closed out the match by winning a marathon match at flight six 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5.

With the win, North Texas snapped a five-match losing streak.
