Men's Tennis Holds Off Charleston, Improves to 12-2

NEW ORLEANS Marcel Volz pulled away late in the third set of his match and the New Orleans Privateers (12-2) held on for a 4-3 win against the College of Charleston Cougars (2-6) on Tuesday at the University Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Volz earned an early service break and backed it up with a hold of serve to lead 3-1. After his opponent, Zac Larke came back from a break point down to hold serve to make it 3-2, Volz took over the match. Serving for the win at 5-2, Volz started the service game with an ace and did not concede a point in the victory.

The day started with the Privateers taking the doubles point. Volz and Espen Lagarde were unstoppable early, winning the first five games on their way to a 6-2 victory. Akos Kotorman and Max Heinzel also controlled matters at flight two with a 6-2 win of their own.

In singles, the Cougars had momentum early with a victory at flight six from Andre Limon at 6-3, 6-2. The Privateers then responded with two straight points.

Heinzel outlasted Robby Krick in a first set tiebreak of a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win. The win moved Heinzel's winning streak to five.

Lagarde came out firing against Noah Borges but had to save a set point in a tiebreak. After moving ahead 7-6 in the second set tiebreak, Lagarde won the next point to finish off a 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory.

The Cougars scored wins at flights three and five that leveled the score before the decider at flight one.

FROM COACH KANGA
"I think it was a really good win for us considering Charleston has had a history of having very good teams. We're continuing to find ways to get things done. I'm proud of the way this team fought. Across the board I thought we competed well."

"Marcel lifted his game up and he didn't give his opponent anything. His backhand and forehand started clicking. He has a big time game and he executed and played at a high level in the third set."

NEXT UP
The Privateers are slated to play in Baton Rouge against LSU on Sunday, Mar. 13. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
