Privateer Pitchers Combine for 11 Strikeouts in Loss to Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane Green Wave (23-10-1) pitched out of some big spots early and held the New Orleans Privateers (19-11) in check to win the second game of the Pelican Cup 4-2 at Maestri Field on Tuesday.

The winner of the final meeting on May 3 will take the 2022 version of the Cup.

DECISIONS
Clifton Slagel (1-1) picked up the win after getting a key strikeout in the sixth with two on and two outs after a 52-minute lightning delay. Collin Kulivan (0-1) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers clawed their way to a 2-0 lead but Green Wave pitching prevented further damage in big spots early. New Orleans got on the board in the second inning with an Andrew Guidry RBI double. The lead was extended to 2-0 on an Anthony Herron Jr. RBI fielder's choice.

However, the Green Wave limited damage in both situations as the Privateers had two on with one out in the second and the bases loaded with one out in the fifth. From there, the Green Wave offense spurted to a tie with a two-run homer by Brady Marget.

Tulane punched across the go-ahead run when Jared Hart scored from second on an infield single by Ethan Groff to move the Green Wave ahead 3-2. Between Brian Valigosky and Zach Devito, the Green Wave allowed just one baserunner over the last three innings to pick up their first win at Maestri Field since 2015.

The Green Wave notched an insurance run in the ninth when Brady Hebert scored on a wild pitch.

INSIDE THE BOX
Privateer pitchers combined to rack up 11 strikeouts on the night. Kasten Furr and Amani Larry combined for four hits. Green Wave batters were limited to just five hits on the night. Two came from Bennett Lee.

NEXT UP
The Privateers will head to Hammond on Thursday to start a series against the Southeastern Lions. First pitch for the series opener is at 6 p.m.
