Doubles Comeback Vaults Women's Tennis to Win vs. Southern Miss

NEW ORLEANSLea Alguacil and Ank Vullings had a stirring comeback in doubles to help vault the New Orleans Privateers (12-8) to a 4-3 win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (13-4) on Wednesday at the University Tennis Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Vullings and Alguacil were up against it as they faced three match points, trailing 6-3 in the tiebreak. However, the duo came back firing and ripped off an impressive five straight points to win the tiebreak and the match 7-6 (6).
 
Earlier, Salma Abdelrahim and Lina Hohnhold overcame conceding a break at 2-2 and won four of the next five games to take a 6-4 decision at flight one.
 
In singles, Hohnohld continued her run as she posted her 14th consecutive win. Hohnhold was relentless all day in winning at flight two. Hohnhold finished the match with an exclamation point, taking seven consecutive games in a 6-2, 6-0 win.
 
Estelle Vanthier cruised in her first set but suddenly found herself down 5-2 in the second set. Vanthier came back strong though with five consecutive games to win 6-1, 7-5.
 
The match was clinched when Alguacil overcame losing the first set and controlled the pace the rest of the way in a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory at flight six.
 
Southern Miss picked up their points at flight four in a straight set win. Sarah Medik came back from down a break early in the second set to win 6-3, 7-5. Maddison Ricardo lost the first set but rebounded for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win for the Golden Eagles.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers will face Xavier (La.) in the regular season finale on Tuesday, Apr. 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the University Tennis Center. The outgoing seniors will be honored prior to the match.
