HOUSTON, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers (16-10, 3-3) fought an uphill climb most of the day but exploded for 11 runs in three innings to take a 14-10 win in the series finale against the HBU Huskies (9-19, 3-3) on Sunday at Husky Field.
DECISIONS
Kyle Khachadourian pitched two key innings late and picked up his second win of the season. Jordan Powell took the loss after allowing four runs in a third of an inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans was up against it, trailing 9-3 after HBU put up a five-run fifth inning. That's when the Privateer lineup went to work. A two-out rally in the sixth was started on a single back up the middle by
Issac Williams who would feature even more prominently later in the game.
After two consecutive walks,
Pearce Howard lined a single that plated two runs. An
Anthony Herron Jr. RBI single sliced the deficit in half as the Privateers trailed 9-6.
An inning later, Williams came up with two on against Tyler Zarella. He promptly connected on an 0-1 pitch for a three-run homer, his second of the weekend, which tied the score at 9-9.
HBU grabbed the lead again in the bottom of the inning on a single by Austin Roccaforte. However, Khachadourian limited the damage to one run and the Privateer offense went back to work, scoring five runs in the decisive eighth inning.
Jeissy De la Cruz tied the game on an RBI ground out and
Travis Gober followed with an RBI triple to deep center that put the Privateers in front. Three more runs came in, including a two-run single off the bat of
Amani Larry.
From there,
Jacob Mead shut down the game with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts. He now has 7.2 scoreless innings on the season.
INSIDE THE BOX
Howard had three RBI and moved past Johnny Giavotella for fifth on the program's career RBI list. Larry was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base.
Kasten Furr scored three runs and reached base four times.
Williams finished with three RBI and three runs.
Tyler Bischke added two runs and Gober was 1-for-1 with a walk, an RBI and a run. The pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts on the day while the offense got into double digits in runs for the tenth time this season.
NEXT UP
The Privateers are slated to play Southern on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Baton Rouge.
