Privateers' Late Rally Denied by Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers saw a ninth inning rally fall short as they brought the tying run to second in a 6-5 loss against the Tulane Green Wave on Tuesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

The win means the Green Wave have the Pelican Cup for the first time since the trophy was reinstated in 2018.

DECISIONS
Keaton Knueppel picked up the win as he did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings. The loss went to Collin Horton (2-2). Chandler Welch picked up his first save of the season for Tulane.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded a pair of three-run homers early. Jackson Linn homered to center to put the Green Wave on the board in the opening frame. Then Jorge Tejeda responded for the Privateers as he sent one to the opposite field to tie the game at 3-3.

The game would remain that way until the fifth inning when a dropped fly ball allowed a run to score with two outs and pushed Tulane in front 4-3. The Green Wave added two more runs in the seventh, aided by a second Privateer error when a miscue off a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed a run to score.

With the score 6-3, the Privateers got the first two runners on in the eighth but could not score a run. One runner was erased when Bennett Lee caught his second runner of the night.

In the ninth, Travis Gober and Tyler Bischke each provided a base hits. Issac Williams then got hit by a pitch to load the bases. From behind in the count, Kasten Furr battled back and eventually lined a single to left that brought in two runs.

However, Welch got ahead in the count and recorded a strikeout on a 1-2 pitch to preserve the victory for the Green Wave in a game that took just over three hours.

NEXT UP
The Privateers will face UIW in a three-game series starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.
