Privateers Take Opening Set in Loss to North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – The New Orleans Privateers (2-4) took the opening set against the North Alabama Lions (5-0) but were ultimately defeated 3-1 (22-25,25-14, 25-16, 25-23) in the finale of the UNA Volleyball Classic.

INSIDE THE BOX
Rita Zecchin had a career-best 33 digs in the match. Mauri Carver and Chandler Lee co-led the attack with nine kills each. Kamryn Scroggins finished with 41 assists and a team-best four service aces. Sydney Gott had four kills in five attempts, all in the fourth set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers started on fire with eight kills in their first 16 swings. New Orleans racked up 17 kills in the first set and led by as many as seven points on two different occasions. The Lions engineered a 5-1 run to cut the lead to three but the Privateers were able to hold off the charge for the rest of the set.

In set two it was the home side who jumped out to a quick advantage. North Alabama scored the first five points and built a 12-3 lead. In the set, the Lions hit .345 and never trailed. The third set saw a better clip for North Alabama as they hit .415.

The fourth set saw the Privateers lead throughout most of the early going. Two kills each by Gott and Lee helped New Orleans to a 5-2 edge. North Alabama rallied to tie the score at 5-5 but the Privateers gained the lead back and held it for most of the set.

North Alabama had their first lead of the set at 19-18 on a Katy Floyd kill. The Lions went on to score the next two points which gave them the cushion needed to hold off the Privateers in a tightly contested fourth set.

Gott kept the match going fending off one match point with a kill but an attack error finished matters as North Alabama went undefeated in their tournament.

NEXT UP
The Privateers return home for the UNO Invitational which starts on Thursday against Southern. The tournament will be played at the Lakefront Arena.
