HOUSTON – The New Orleans Privateers posted 15 kills in the first set but conceded late runs in the first two sets of a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-16) loss to the HCU Huskies on Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gym to finish out the weekend road swing.
New Orleans had a positive start spearheaded by the tandem of
Karen Cordero Barr and
Courtney Roundtree. The Privateers scored five of the first six points in the opening set and had a 15-11 edge in the kill department. HCU quickly erased the lead though and finished the set strong when they went on a 7-2 run to close out. Anna Gadway had two kills in that stretch.
The second set saw the Privateers keep it close while leading at different points early in the set. A 6-1 spurt saw the Privateers go ahead 14-12 in the second set. HCU again had an answer though as their hitting percentage went up in each set.
Their .371 attack percentage in set two vaulted the Huskies to a 2-0 lead. HCU outscored New Orleans 13-5 for the remainder of the set and had five of the last six points go in their favor to close out another set that was in the balance.
HCU hit .412 in the final set and built a lead that was too much to overcome. The Huskies were up 18-7 at one point when the Privateers hit a mini spurt started by back-to-back kills from Roundtree. The Privateers scored on seven of the next 10 rallies but HCU regrouped as Lexie Temple finished off the match by scoring the last two points for the Huskies.
