Privateers Top Texans in Front of Second Largest Crowd in Program History

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS: DEARICA PRYOR | COACH TRELANNE POWELL

NEW ORLEANS
– In front of a youthful and exuberant crowd, the New Orleans Privateers eclipsed the 20-assist mark and never trailed after the end of the first quarter in a 67-59 win over the Tarleton State Texans on Monday at Lakefront Arena.

The announced crowd of 877 was the second-largest in program history only behind the 921 that was announced for Education Day in 2019.

After trading the lead several times in the first quarter (five in total), New Orleans had the first big run which commenced from the start of the second. Jayla Kimbrough finished a layup at the rim and was fouled. That bucket fueled a 10-0 run which went into the media timeout.

New Orleans traded points for the remainder of the second quarter and went into the halftime locker room ahead 33-24. The Texans were held to just 9-of-26 from the field in the first half and didn't make a field goal until the 3:13 mark.

Out of the halftime break, the Privateers maintained their hold on the game. The lead never got below seven points and the home side led by as many as 15 points in the penultimate quarter.

In the fourth, the game tightened near the five-minute mark as Tyler Jackson hit a layup to cut the Privateer lead to 60-55. Kimbrough answered with a jumper on the next possession though and the Privateer defense held Tarleton without a point for the last 2:29.

Nahja Scott drew seven fouls and the Privateers more than doubled the Texans' free throw attempts (23 to 11).

INSIDE THE BOX
DeArica Pryor led all Privateers with 16 points and went 4-of-5 from three-point range. She also had seven rebounds. The point total vaulted Pryor to 905 career points. Kimbrough was 6-of-9 from the field and finished with 13 points. Justice Ross finished with three blocks and six rebounds. Alexis Calderon had eight points and seven assists.

Faith Acker finished with a team-high 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Teresa Da Silva added 11 points and Tyler Jackson added 10 rebounds.

NEXT UP
The Privateers will travel to Alcorn for their last non-conference game on Wednesday. Tip is scheduled for 12 p.m.

WE ARE YOUR KREWE
For 54 seasons, Privateer student-athletes have had the unique experience of wearing New Orleans across their chests.  Like the city itself, our sports teams have been fueled by resiliency, grit, and the unquenchable desire to win.  Our city also houses the nation's biggest celebration each year. And much like a Mardi Gras parade krewe, we are tethered to our community through pride, tradition, a culture of acceptance, and finally our commitment to show that New Orleans is a world-class city to live, learn, play and work. We invite you to become more involved with the only University that truly represents New Orleans all day, every day.  Join #NOLAsTeam, We Are Your Krewe!
