NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team came out sharp in doubles on their way to a 7-0 win over the Jackson State Tigers on Sunday at the Privateer Tennis Center.
New Orleans (3-2) got out to a flying start thanks to the doubles combinations which have been rock solid this season.
Espen Lagarde and
Lilian Dubois dominated their match to the tune of a 6-1 win at flight three.
The point clincher came from
Karim Al-Amin and
Matthew Armbruster. The pair kept a break ahead and nearly broke again for match point. On the changeover, leading 5-4 though the pair served out to clinch the point.
Max Heinzel and
Luke Joujan played out their match and won 7-6 (4) in a tiebreak.
In singles, Dubois was the first off court after exhibiting laser focus throughout. The true freshman won 6-2, 6-1.
Armbruster was in cruise control early. He gained an early break and then earned another service break later in the first set. He carried that momentum into the second set and won 6-2, 6-2.
The clincher came from Al-Amin. After a solid first set, Al-Amin built an early lead but found himself having to break serve to stay in the second set. Down 40-0, Al-Amin kept the pressure on and eventually found the break to level the score at 5-5.
After each player held to force a tiebreak, Al-Amin had to deal with a mini break, trailing 2-0. However, he rattled off the next six points in succession and won the tiebreak to finish his match.
Lagarde overcame a rocky start and stormed back for two dominant sets to win his match 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. Heinzel and Joujan both won in straight sets to close out the sweep.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will head to Mobile to face South Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 18. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
