NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team got clutch performances in doubles and an early jump start in singles as they defeated the Jackson State Tigers 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Privateer Tennis Center.
It started with the doubles point getting secured on courts two and three.
Raluca Puscas and
Didi Bredberg Canizares got the early edge on their way to a 6-3 win at flight two. Then
Anastassia Kouchnareva and
Ksenia Reznitskaya had to hold on after an early lead was narrowed.
The pair led 4-1 but Jackson State earned a service break after a hold to close the gap to 4-3. Kouchnareva and Reznitskaya bounced back though and won the last two points off the Tigers' service game to break for a 6-4 win.
In singles, the first point went on the board quickly as Bredberg won by an opponent's retirement from the match after two games.
Kateryna Kalistratova was clinical throughout her match and dominated the second set for the Privateers' third point with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Jackson State got a point on their side after Tyra-Nicole Whyte rallied from down a set to win her singles match at flight three.
Then it was to
Tristanne Dechoux who had a big hold in the second set to maintain her service break advantage at 5-3. On the changeover, Dechoux served for the match and got it done to finish it out in the Privateers' favor.
The remaining two matches went to Jackson State at flights two and six. Both went three sets.
