Privateers Fall Behind Early in Loss at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State Owls opened an early advantage and never looked back as they defeated the New Orleans Privateers 10-1 on Saturday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium.

DECISIONS
Blake Aita got the win in relief after spanning 2.1 innings while allowing a run on four hits. Starter, Blake Wehunt went 4.0 shutout innings. The loss went to Brandon Mitchell who went 3.0 innings and allowed five runs (four earned). He struck out three batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls employed small ball to jump out to an early lead in the second. Back-to-back singles, the second of which came on a bunt, put the first two runners on in the frame. Two batters later, a squeeze bunt by Jay Knowles plated the first run.

The theme of the day from there was two-out hitting for the Owls. Zac Corbin and Nick Colina each produced a run-scoring single later in the frame. An inning later, back-to-back sac fly RBIs from Spencer Hanson and Brayden Eidson extended the Kennesaw State lead to 5-0.

Trey Usey came on in his Privateer debut and stranded a pair of runners in his first inning of work. New Orleans went on to load the bases with one out in the fifth. Miguel Useche plated the first Privateer run on a sac fly.

However, Aita got out of the inning without any further damage done and the Owls set sail from there. Even though the Owls pulled away on the scoreboard, the Privateers generated traffic in most innings. They stranded 13 runners on base though.

INSIDE THE BOX
Usey, Ryan Delorbe and Matthew Maldonado all made their Privateer debuts on the mound. Usey struck out three in two innings of work. Maldonado threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout. At the plate, Kasten Furr went 3-for-5 and Issac Williams went 2-for-4. Jeissy De la Cruz walked twice and scored the only run for New Orleans.

The Owls had two-hit games from Colina, Hanson, Knowles, Nick Hassan and Jackson Chirello. Wehunt struck out six batters in his Kennesaw State debut.
