HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Continuing with a tough opening season stretch, the New Orleans Privateers fell behind early and could not recover in a 12-0 loss to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park.
 
DECISIONS
Billy Oldham picked up the win after pitching five no-hit innings with nine strikeouts in his Southern Miss debut. 
Jose Cabrera took the loss in his first start with New Orleans.
 
The Golden Eagles didn't waste time getting to a lead. Tate Parker and Slade Wilks produced a pair of two-out RBI hits to get Southern Miss in front 2-0 after the first inning. The Golden Eagles went on to add seven more in the third as they sent 11 to the plate.
 
Southern Miss produced five hits, three for extra bases in their seven-run inning. Carson Paetow delivered his second extra base hit of the night, a triple that scored two runs.
 
From there, the Golden Eagles were in command throughout the remainder of the night. New Orleans did not get a baserunner until 
Myles Austin reached second on a wild pitch after striking out in the fourth inning.
 
The first hit came when 
Miguel Useche doubled in the seventh. New Orleans drew two walks on the night.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Connor Handy, 
Zeph Hoffpauir and 
Canaan Clayton all made their Privateer debuts on the mound. Handy struck out five batters. Clayton retired the side and needed only 10 pitches. Hoffpauir struck out a pair.
 
Southern Miss had 14 hits on the night. Reece Ewing went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Dustin Dickerson scored three runs.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers will open their home slate on Friday against Jackson State in the Andre Dawson Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
