Privateers Fall Just Short in Defensive Battle Against UIW

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers were in a defensive battle throughout but they fell short 50-45 to the UIW Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at the Lakefront Arena.

Though UIW never led by more than eight points, they were ahead for over 36 minutes of the contest including the entire second half. New Orleans got close to either tying or taking the lead on several occasions and a Nahja Scott layup tied the score at 31-31 late in the third.

However, UIW came up with the clutch three-pointer to seal the deal. With 4.4 seconds left, Jorja Elliott hit a triple from the corner to put the Cardinals up by their final margin of victory.

It was a low scoring game throughout the first half as neither team found their best offensive footing in the opening 20 minutes. New Orleans shot 29.4 percent from the field while UIW was held to 25 percent from the field.

UIW led throughout most of a close first half, and had an advantage as large as seven points with 4:50 left in the second quarter. However, New Orleans narrowed the gap to 20-19 by halftime thanks to their repeated visits to the free throw line.

New Orleans outshot UIW 14-4 at the charity stripe with 12 of those attempts coming in the second quarter.
