Privateers Win Tough Battle Against NJIT

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team held firm in two tiebreaks for the doubles point on their way to a 5-2 victory over the NJIT Highlanders on Wednesday afternoon at the Privateer Tennis Center.

Karim Al-Amin and Matthew Armbruster chased down their opponents from a service break down in the match. Trailing 5-4, Al-Amin and Armbruster broke serve to level the score. Once it carried to a tiebreak, the duo built a 6-1 lead and held off the Highlanders' duo of Wil Jenkins and Samuel Townes to win the break 7-5.

The doubles point was clinched when Luke Joujan and Max Heinzel rallied back from a 4-2 deficit in their tiebreak. The duo rattled off the next five points in succession to win their match 7-4 in the tiebreak.

NJIT earned a win at flight one in doubles when Pablo Perez Ramos and Josh Smith got an early break and made it hold throughout in a 6-4 victory.

In singles, the Privateers won the first two matches to finish. Espen Lagarde was clinical in his first set and carried that momentum into the second for a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Shortly afterward, Lilian Dubois sealed his match. The freshman coasted to a win by a double break in the first set and was solid throughout in a 6-2, 6-3 win at flight five.

Al-Amin finished his match off to clinch it for the Privateers. On serve in the second set after a long first, Al-Amin was trailing 3-2. The freshman won the next four games though and closed out his match to give the Highlanders their second loss of the season.

Joujan won the other point when his opponent was forced to retire from the match due to injury while down a service break in the third set.
