Women's Tennis Hands UIW First Southland Loss

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team controlled play in singles matches, winning five-of-six in a 5-2 victory over the UIW Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at the Privateer Tennis Center.

The Privateers got their first conference win while dealing UIW their first Southland loss this season.

New Orleans won three matches in straight sets in singles and a fourth after an opponent injury early in the first set as they rallied back after UIW snagged the doubles point to start the day.

Didi Bredberg Canizares continued her strong freshman campaign. After taking the first set against Brandelyn Fulgenzi, the second set began with Bredberg getting out to a 5-1 lead. She ultimately put the finishing touches on the match three games later with a service break to win 6-3, 6-3.

Laurie Barendse fought through a pair of long sets for a 6-4, 7-5. Barendse went 2-0 in singles for the week after a win against Estefania Gonzalez.

Tristanne Dechoux's match ended early after her opponent, Amelie Montalvo had to retire from the match before the fourth game of the first set due to injury.

Audelia Morin Kougoucheff earned the clinching point at flight six. Koughoucheff won her first set 6-2 and carried that momentum over into another dominant set that included a match point that went over 90 seconds.

With the match secured, Kateryna Kalistratova persevered with a strong third set. Lyric Bonilla came back to win the second set after conceding an early break but it was Kalistratova who controlled the action throughout the third set in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win.

Sophia Kermet won the lone singles match on the day for UIW at 6-4, 7-5. The Cardinals won a tiebreak at flight two in doubles to secure the doubles point.
