HAMMOND, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team put up a furious battle but fell on the short end of a 4-3 decision against the Southeastern Lady Lions on Saturday at the SLU Tennis Complex.
The deciding point was contested at flight three. Carla Del Barrio and
Anastassia Kouchnareva played a grueling three-set match that began with a first set tiebreak.
Del Barrio won the first set tiebreak 10-8 to take the early lead but Kouchnareva responded by winning the second set 6-4. Del Barrio held in the third set 6-3 though as Southeastern moved to 2-3 in Southland play.
Southeastern won a critical doubles point to begin the day. Flory Bierma and Putri Insani made a service break hold as they won 6-4 at flight one. That was after the Privateers' duo of
Didi Bredberg Canizares and
Raluca Puscas won 6-2 at flight two.
It all came down to court three for the doubles point. Kate Oborina and Alba Perez broke through with a late service break to win 7-5 and take the first marker of the day.
When the action broke down to singles, Bredberg got the first Privateer point on the board. She put together another strong performance in beating Insani 6-1, 6-2.
From there, Southeastern won the next two points to take a 3-1 lead in the match.
That's when the Privateers had a pair of players rally back from a set down to win their respective matches.
Kateryna Kalistratova bounced back from losing the first set to beat Bierma 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Laurie Barendse did the same thing as she topped Gabrielle Dekkers 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
