Privateers Fall Short in Low Scoring Series Finale Against Northwestern State

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers recorded 13 strikeouts on the mound but fell short in a 4-1 decision in the series finale against the Northwestern State Demons on Sunday afternoon at Maestri Field.

DECISIONS
Drayton Brown picked up the win after recording seven strikeouts and allowing one run in five innings. Colton Mercer took the loss and is now 2-2. The save went to Chase Prestwich, his first of the season.

The Demons got some insurance in the ninth inning with back-to-back home runs. Gray Rowlett homered with two outs and Broch Holmes followed with a solo homer of his own to extend a one-run lead to three in the last frame.

From there, Prestwich finished it off. Tristan Moore got aboard on a one-out single but that was all the Privateers got in the last frame as they fell to 2-4 in Southland play through the first two weeks of conference.

Northwestern State got on the board when Jacob Farrell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second inning. The Demons added another run on the strength of back-to-back doubles from Rowlett and Holmes.

New Orleans put up a threat in the sixth inning when they got the first three men aboard. Myles Austin drew a walk and Issac Williams followed with a single. After Kasten Furr got aboard with a bunt single, the Demons went to Prestwich.

Prestwich proceeded to strike out two of the next three batters and the only run scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Moore. He threw four shutout innings and allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts.

INSIDE THE BOX
Mercer and Beau Blanchard combined for 13 strikeouts. Furr went 2-for-4 and had five hits over the last two games of the weekend.

Rowlett, Holmes and Jake Haze had two hits each. The Demons drew eight free passes.

The Privateers will travel to Jackson State on Tuesday, Apr. 4.
