SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers put on a power display in the first game of the series as they won 12-1 in a run rule over the UIW Cardinals on Friday. In the nightcap, the Cardinals rallied from five runs down for an 11-10 win to split the day.
GAME ONE: NEW ORLEANS-12 UIW-1 (7)
DECISIONS
Brandon Mitchell picked up his ninth win of the season after holding the Cardinals to one run over seven innings. Ryan Schlotzhauer took the loss after surrendering six runs on three hits and four walks.
Even though the Privateers were narrowly outhit in the first game, they made their hits count. After the first two men got on,
Tristan Moore hit a three-run homer which was just a prelude of what was to come. That coupled with a scoreless first inning put the Privateers off and running.
They never relented as New Orleans kept bashing the ball all over the yard. Four of their first five hits were homers and the Privateers put up multiple runs in each of the first four innings.
Issac Williams and
Mitchell Sanford both homered. Then Moore came up again and delivered his fourth two-homer game of the season. Moore now stands at 18 home runs, tied for the fourth highest single season total in program history.
Mitchell went the distance in a shortened game for his fourth complete game of the season. Moore and Sanford combined for nine RBI in the first game of the afternoon.
GAME TWO: UIW-11 NEW ORLEANS-10
DECISIONS
Steve Hayward pitched the final three innings and overcame a rocky start to pick up his seventh win of the year. The loss went to
Beau Blanchard.
The Cardinals loaded the bases on three singles (the last of which was on a bunt). After jumping ahead in the count at 3-1, Warren Laster lined the next pitch into right-center which preserved the comeback win for UIW.
New Orleans was leading for most of the afternoon as they again put early pressure on the Cardinals. Moore hit an RBI triple and Sanford followed with a run scoring double to put the Privateers up 2-0 after an inning.
The Cardinals hit two homers over the next two innings to grab a brief lead but New Orleans put up a four-spot in the fourth. The big hit was the first of two homers from
Kasten Furr. After Furr's second homer, the Privateers were up 8-3 and in cruise control.
However, UIW rallied back all with two outs in the sixth. Three consecutive singles set the tone. Laster singled up the middle to bring in two. Grant Randall and Wilson Ehrhardt followed with RBI singles. The tying run later came in on a balk.
New Orleans went back in front when
Anthony Herron Jr. plated a pair of runs on a line drive to right center. However, the Cardinals got one back in the bottom of the seventh
Blanchard came on with two on and no outs in the eighth and got the next three men in order to keep the Privateers ahead going into the final frame.
Six Privateers had two hits on the day. Furr upped his home run total to seven on the season. Herron, Moore, Sanford,
Jeissy De la Cruz and
Tyler Bischke all had two hits.
