NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers drew 10 walks in the first three innings and held off the Jackson State Tigers in a 6-3 win on Tuesday night at Maestri Field.
DECISIONS
Connor Handy picked up the win after throwing two scoreless innings, his first decision of the season. The loss went to Erwins Branche who lasted only a third of an inning.
Jacob Mead picked up his first save of the season.
New Orleans led 6-3 heading into the ninth inning but the Tigers strung together a hit and two walks to start the frame and load the bases. That's when Mead came in and went to work against the heart of the order.
Mead struck out Ty Hill, Bret Mersman and Myles White in 14 pitches to become the seventh Privateer to earn a save this season. Of the 10 strikes recorded, seven were swinging and two were looking. The other was a foul ball off the bat of White.
After Jackson State grabbed the lead to start when White drew a bases loaded walk, the Privateers responded with four runs in their half of the opening inning.
Four walks, two wild pitches and a two-run single mixed in by
Miguel Useche gave New Orleans a 4-1 lead after the first.
Jackson State pitching settled in and held the Privateer bats quiet. Then came the sixth when the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs.
Jose Cabrera came in and induced a shallow fly out off the bat of Oscar Gomez.
Two subsequent runs scored on a sac fly and a wild pitch to cut the Privateer lead to 4-3. Cabrera was then ahead in the count at 1-2 on Jatavis Melton. Before he could throw another pitch, two light towers at the stadium went out, causing a 17-minute delay. When play was resumed, Cabrera struck out Melton looking on the next pitch.
New Orleans added to their lead in the seventh when
Issac Williams lined a single through the left side with two outs.
