Privateers Fall in Defensive Battle Against Defending Southland Champion, Southeastern

POSTGAME- COACH POWELL

NEW ORLEANS
– The New Orleans Privateers came out strong early on but a big fourth quarter by the Southeastern Lady Lions was enough to vault them to a 57-44 decision over New Orleans on Saturday at the Lakefront Arena.

The Lady Lions trailed 42-41 but they assumed the lead 58 seconds into the final stanza and never trailed the rest of the way. Southeastern held New Orleans to two points in the final quarter.

The Privateers began the game with great energy on the defensive end of the floor as they shut down Southeastern. New Orleans got out to an 11-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter but the Lady Lions scored five points in the final 35 seconds with a triple by Kennedy Paul to beat the first quarter horn.

The teams went to the half tied at 20-20 as both squads' defenses took center stage. Neither team shot over 33 percent in the second quarter and there was only one free throw attempt between the sides in the second 10 minutes.

A critical eight-point stretch from Nahja Scott helped keep the Privateers within range of the defending Southland champions. Six of those points came from the free throw line. Alexis Calderon sank a free throw with 37 seconds left in the third to give New Orleans a 42-41 advantage entering the final quarter.

INSIDE THE BOX
Jayla Kimbrough led all Privateers with 18 points, one shy of a career-high. She added seven rebounds and two steals. Scott finished with eight points and five rebounds. There were nine lead changes on the afternoon.

Southeastern was led Arianna Patton who had 12 points off the bench. Hailey Giaratano had all 11 of her points in the second half.

NEXT UP
The Privateers will face Nicholls in Thibodaux next Thursday. Tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

WE ARE YOUR KREWE
For 54 seasons, Privateer student-athletes have had the unique experience of wearing New Orleans across their chests.  Like the city itself, our sports teams have been fueled by resiliency, grit, and the unquenchable desire to win.  Our city also houses the nation's biggest celebration each year. And much like a Mardi Gras parade krewe, we are tethered to our community through pride, tradition, a culture of acceptance, and finally our commitment to show that New Orleans is a world-class city to live, learn, play and work. We invite you to become more involved with the only University that truly represents New Orleans all day, every day.  Join #NOLAsTeam, We Are Your Krewe!
