Privateers' Late Rally Falls Short at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team made a late run but ran out of time as they fell 57-48 to the Tarleton State Texans on Tuesday afternoon at Wisdom Gym.

New Orleans won the turnover battle and had a lot of free throw trips in the third quarter but could not overcome an afternoon where they shot 24.1 percent. The Privateers trailed by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter when they went on a 10-0 run to cut the Texans' lead to seven with 1:26 left. However, New Orleans could not draw closer as the Texans grabbed their first win of the season.

The Privateers began with the first six points of the contest, but the Texans clawed their way back after their defense held New Orleans without a field goal for over six minutes. The Texans scored eight points in that span. Karyn Sanford of Tarleton State and Gabbi Cartagena of the Privateers traded triples on consecutive possessions and the first quarter ended with the home team holding a narrow 12-11 lead.

The Privateers had to fight through foul trouble at the point guard position early as both Cartagena and Alexis Calderon had two fouls by the 9:32 mark of the second quarter, but Jayla Kimbrough's attacking play was a big asset down the stretch.

Kimbrough completed an old school three-point play with 21 seconds left in the half that stopped a 9-0 Tarleton run. The Privateers trailed 28-23 at halftime as Kimbrough had nine first half points.

New Orleans visited the free throw line frequently in the third quarter as they got in the bonus quickly. The Privateers had 17 free throw attempts and made 11 in the penultimate quarter. Still, the Texans kept the Privateers at arm's length as they led 43-36 heading into the last ten minutes.

Three Texans landed in double figures. Arieona Rosborough and Jakoriah Long each had 11 points. Faith Acker finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.

INSIDE THE BOX
Kimbrough led the Privateers with 16 points and added five rebounds and four steals. Alexis Calderon had 12 points and four steals. Nora Francois finished the day with seven points and team-leading eight rebounds.
