NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team snagged the third set in extra rallies behind strong offensive numbers but the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders scored a 3-1 (25-14, 25-15, 24-26, 25-16) decision on Saturday afternoon at the Human Performance Center.
The Privateers led by as many as four points in the third set where they hit .389 and had 15 kills to one error. New Orleans had two different cracks at set point that the Islanders saved but New Orleans converted on their third attempt with a
Buse Kocakaya kill.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had a fast start in response to begin the fourth set. Leah Stolfus had three kills as the Islanders got out to a 10-2 advantage at the outset of what turned into the deciding set.
New Orleans got the deficit to within five on a couple of occasions but could not draw closer. The Islanders had a 16-7 advantage in the kill department to finish out the match in their favor.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used a 6-0 run at the end of the set to get an early leg up at 1-0. Kocakaya and
Courtney Roundtree got the Privateers within five points, but the Islanders responded with a six-point spurt to finish off the first set.
The visiting team from South Texas had their most efficient set in the second when they hit .581. The Islanders had 19 kills to one error in 31 attempts and never trailed.
Kyndal Payne led the Islander attack with 14 kills. Tori Arrington finished with 13 kills. Brooklyn Jaeger had 16 digs and Stolfus was in on three blocks.
INSIDE THE BOX
Roundtree led the Privateer attack with 12 kills. Kocakaya finished with eight kills and
Akeir Scales had seven kills with a .412 attack percentage.
Alexis Belarmino and
Defne Eciroglu combined for 37 assists.
Molly Kehoe finished with four service aces and
Lani Alleman had 12 digs.
