IOWA CITY, Iowa – The New Orleans Privateers got 38 points from the duo of
James White and
MJ Thomas, but hot shooting got the Iowa Hawkeyes going early as they scored a 104-57 victory at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hawkeyes hit a barrage of three-pointers in the first half that started from the very first possession of the game when Brock Harding made a triple, which was assisted by Josh Dix.
New Orleans responded with baskets from Thomas and White on their next two possessions to take their first and only lead of the game at 4-3. From there the Hawkeyes controlled matters behind 68 percent shooting from the field and 13 assists on 21 field goals.
Defensively, the Hawkeyes also had seven blocks in the first half. They wound up with 11 rejections total on the afternoon.
After Thomas threw up a shot that went in to beat the shot clock to cut the Hawkeyes lead to 16-11 with 13:27 left in the first half, Iowa came back with a 19-2 run over the next 3:46 of game action. Iowa went to the locker room with a 57-29 lead after 20 minutes.
The home side continued their hot shooting into the second half as they scored on four of their first six possessions in the second half. Iowa shot 62.7 percent from the field and eclipsed 100 points for the second time this season.
New Orleans pulled down 16 offensive rebounds for the game and had 16 assists on 25 field goals. 38 of their 57 points came in the paint.
INSIDE THE BOX
Jah Short smashed his season high in rebounds with 11. His previous season high was six on two different occasions. White finished with 24 points on 11-of-20 from the field. Thomas added 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and a block.
Grant Kemp hit a pair of second half three-pointers to account for his six points.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will travel to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns on Thursday, Dec. 19. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
