JACKSONVILLE, Ala. –
Tre'Miyah Berry had her first collegiate game in double figures but the Jacksonville State Gamecocks held off an early fourth quarter charge to defeat the New Orleans Privateers 57-47 on Friday at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Berry was one of three Privateers in double figures with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-of-6 from downtown.
New Orleans was playing from behind for the entire second half and they were down by double digits at the third quarter media timeout. The Privateers with relentless defense chipped away at the lead though and got it down to a single possession when
Jayla Kimbrough hit two free throws to cut the Jacksonville State lead to 50-47 with 6:06 remaining.
However, the Gamecocks got a three on the next possession from Mya Barnes, which helped Jacksonville State snap a four-game losing streak. They held the Privateers without a field goal for the remainder of regulation.
Both sides traded the lead on five different occasions in the first half. New Orleans scored the first four points of the late afternoon tip, but the Gamecocks responded with five points in the next 83 seconds to give them their first lead of the contest.
Jacksonville State had the first big run of the game with 10 straight points in the last 2:34 of the opening stanza to take a 17-13 lead. The Gamecocks extended that run to the first made basket of the second quarter to build a seven-point lead, which tied their largest of the first half.
New Orleans came firing right back as they steadily chipped away at the lead before wrestling it back on a Berry three-pointer with 3:44 left in the half. The Gamecocks responded with two straight threes from Valentina Saric to help the home side carry a 34-29 advantage into the break.
