NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers attempted to rally after falling behind early but the Southern Miss Golden Eagles wound up with the 15-10 victory on Wednesday night at Maestri Field.
Chase Adams got the win in relief for Southern Miss. The loss went to
Ryan Delorbe.
The first inning saw both teams put up multiple runs as they combined for seven runs on just two hits. Southern Miss fired the first shot with a four-run opening frame. After four walks through the first five batters, Matthew Russo cleared the bases with a three-run double.
New Orleans came back with three runs of their own in the opening inning against starter, Chandler Bet.
Victor Castillo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Two more runs came in on a sac fly and a throwing error.
The Golden Eagles gained some separation when Nick Monistere hit a line drive that snuck over the left field wall for a two-run homer. The road team added four more runs in the fourth inning to stretch their lead to 10-3.
Trailing 11-4 heading into the seventh, New Orleans threatened a late push.
Mitchell Sanford sent one over the fence for a three-run homer to trim the gap to four runs. However, Southern Miss was able to lean on the strikeout pitch when needed. They retired two of the next three batters, both via a strikeout and eventually got out of the inning without any further damage.
Southern Miss put up four runs in the eighth to separate again. The Privateers went down swinging as they plated three runs, mostly generated by pinch hitters.
Sean Sparling drilled an RBI single to center and
Kai Hori had a two-run single to left.
INSIDE THE BOX
Sanford and
Miguel Useche both hit their first home runs of the season.
Maika Niu had two hits and two runs scored. The Privateers had nine hits as a team. Six pitchers made their season debut for the Privateers.
Southern Miss was led by the duo of Monistere and Russo who combined for six hits and 10 RBI. Adams threw 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out four in the win. Gabe Broadus reached base five times (two hits, three walks) and scored three runs.

The Privateers open a three-game series with Evansville on Friday at Maestri Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
