NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers fell behind in the early frames and a couple of rally attempts fell short in a 6-3 loss to the Tulane Green Wave on Tuesday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane built a 4-0 lead through four innings on the strength of a pair of home runs and a steal of home plate from Connor Rasmussen which accounted for the opening run of the game in the bottom of the second inning.
The Privateers started to chip away at the lead as they got to starter, Luc Fladda in the fifth.
Rowan Watt doubled to score
Brady Drawbaugh for the first run. Two batters later, a sac fly by
Diego Villescas brought a second run home in the inning.
Blaise Wilcenski was called on out of the pen and he got the Green Wave out with no further damage on the scoreboard.
From there, Jackson Linn added his second home run of the game in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 5-2.
Issac Williams drilled his 20
th career homer to lead off the eighth inning and pull the Privateers back within two runs. However, the Green Wave answered with a run on their own. A lead-off triple by Rasmussen was followed by a squeeze play. Though the throw beat Rasmussen to the plate, he managed to avoid the tag and push the Green Wave lead to three.
Since the Pelican Cup has been reinstated in 2018 it's the first time that Tulane has won the first game of the series.
Cortez Dennis got the start for the Privateers and had his longest outing. He went five innings and did not walk a batter. He struck out five and allowed three earned runs (four total).
Collin Loupe matched his career-high for hits in a game as he went 3-for-4. The Privateers had eight hits as a team.
Linn was 3-for-3 with the two home runs and a single. Gavin Schulz was 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and an RBI. Henry Shuffler pitched the last two innings for his first save of the season.
