JACKSON, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team won a couple of crucial three-set matches for a 4-3 win over the Jackson State Tigers. The women's team in their season debut, lost the doubles point and a pair of three-set matches in a 4-2 defeat to the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon.
MEN'S RECAP
NEW ORLEANS-4 JACKSON STATE-3
It was the freshmen who delivered for the Privateers in the clutch to help them rally back from losing a hard-fought doubles point.
Sergi Tintore won a long first set in a tiebreak. After his opponent, Alejandro Pinilla won the second set by a single service break, Tintore came through again late in the third set for a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
Uwe Diehl also won his match in three sets at flight five. Diehl took a similar path as he won the first set then lost the second in a tiebreak before coming through in the latter moments of the match. Diehl won 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 against Gokalp Ayar.
Matthew Armbruster and
Marcel Volz also notched points for the Privateer men. Armbruster scored a straight set win by a score line of 6-3, 6-3 over Federick Pickenstainer at flight three.
Volz made quick work of his opponent as he beat freshman, Ching Chang Chiu 6-0, 6-1 at flight one singles.
The Tigers won the doubles point by virtue of taking all three matches, two of which went to tiebreaks.
WOMEN'S RECAP
JACKSON STATE-4 NEW ORLEANS-2
The women's squad, which had their first two matches postponed because of inclement weather, made their debut today but it was the Tigers who prevailed in the three-set matches to take the overall decision.
Robin Alston and Zeina Shaaban both rallied back from a set down to take their respective matches at flight two and three for the Tigers which put them over the top. Alston won the deciding set 6-3 while Shaaban took hers 6-4.
The Privateers were ahead in the other third set match as
Audelia Morin Kougoucheff came back from a set down. She was leading Isabela Benavides 3-0 in the third set when the match was decided for the Tigers.
New Orleans got their points from
Laurie Barendse and
Tristanne Dechoux. Barendse, who led all returners for the Privateers in wins, got her spring off to a good start in singles after she beat Tyra-Nicole Whyte 6-4, 6-2.
Dechoux won her first set without dropping a game on the way to a 6-0, 6-4 win against Chiara Desia at flight five.
The Tigers won the doubles point by taking matches at flight two and three. Dechoux and
Anastassia Kouchnareva won their doubles match at flight one 6-4 for the Privateers.

Both teams head to Pensacola to face West Florida on Saturday.
