Men's Tennis Starts Conference Play With Victory Over Nicholls

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team got out to fast start in conference play as they topped the Nicholls Colonels 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the Privateer Tennis Center.

The day started with a solid performance in doubles. Marcel Volz and Luke Joujan dominated for a 6-2 victory at flight two. Matthew Armbruster and Sergi Tintore also engineered a 6-3 victory for the Privateers to win the doubles point.

All four men also won their singles matches.

Tintore had one of his strongest performances of the season from the score line as he only conceded one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Antonio Sasso.

The top three flights saw Volz, Joujan and Armbruster all come out on top of tight sets on their way to victory. Volz was pushed to near the limit in both sets but persevered for a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Omar Morsy.

Joujan took down Harry Collins as he won a first set tiebreak 7-5. Joujan turned that into a double break margin in the second set for a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory.

Armbruster rounded out the performances at the top of the rotation. After he breezed through the first set, Armbruster was taken to a second set tiebreak by Danail Banov but Armbruster came through 7-3 in the breaker.

Nicholls won the matches at flight five and six. Kotaro Matsumura won a third set super tiebreak 11-9 to close out the day.
