CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers put up a fierce battle and won the doubles point but lost the match 5-2 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas J. Henry Center.
Marcel Volz and
Luke Joujan started the day with a flight two doubles victory as they overwhelmed Antoine Vicaire and Matthieu Coignet 6-2. At flight three,
Matthew Armbruster and
Sergi Tintore prevailed 6-4 to give the Privateers the first point of the day.
Five of the six singles matches went three sets in what was another fierce battle between the last two Southland champions.
The only match that went straight sets was to the Islanders when Nicolas Trebuchet won 6-3, 6-4 at flight six.
Joujan earned a point in singles as he took his match at flight two. Joujan had two service breaks worth of a difference in the first set. His opponent, Etienne Marty took the second set by a single break but Joujan came back strong with a 6-2 third set to take the victory.
Avery Zavala rallied from a set down to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at flight one. Iannis Fernandes held on for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory at flight four. Vicaire won 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at flight five. With the match decided, Lucas Schurdevin won the race to 10 in a super tiebreak 7-5, 4-6, 10-6.
