NEW ORLEANS –
Colton Mercer and
Trey Usey combined to strike out 13 batters and the New Orleans Privateers got the tying run on base in each of the last two innings but a late rally fell short in a 5-4 loss to the Memphis Tigers on Friday night at Maestri Field.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, the Privateers spent the rest of the game trying to come back.
Miguel Useche delivered his second hit of the night, a two-run double that trimmed the Tigers' lead to one as he was the first batter to face closer, Brayden Sanders.
Sanders got the next three men in order though and stranded Useche at third. After Memphis went scoreless in the top of the ninth, the Privateers put the pressure on Sanders again.
Andrew Guidry reached on an error and
Sean Sparling was hit by a pitch. The tying and winning runs were on base but Sanders struck out the next two batters to preserve the win and his fourth save of the season.
The Tigers got on the board with three hits surrounding two Privateer errors. Two of the first three men in the Memphis order reached via an error. Daunte Stuart brought in the first run with an RBI single and Seth Cox delivered the big hit later in the inning.
Cox hit a bases clearing double that scored three runs and gave the Tigers early cushion ahead of David Warren who pitched seven innings and picked up his second win of the season.
The Privateers got on the board in the third inning on an
Alexander Saunier sac fly. The teams traded a run in the sixth inning. Memphis scored on an errant pickoff throw while the Privateers scored on a
Bryce Calloway single.
