NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers erupted for eight runs in the first inning as they defeated the Jackson State Tigers 16-5 on Wednesday night in a run rule at Maestri Field.
Jackson State (16-5) grabbed a short-lived lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI ground out but starter,
Tyler LeBlanc got out of the inning when he cut off a throw to second and started a rundown to catch Rodney Hibler Jr. at home.
Then the Privateers went to work offensively. In the first inning, they sent 13 men to the plate.
Mitchell Sanford tied the game at 1-1 with his first of four hits on the night.
Dylan Mach delivered a two-run single and the Privateers continued to pile on from there. Seven of the eight runs scored with two outs.
New Orleans (10-10) pulled away further with five runs in the third inning. That barrage was capped off by
Brady Prewitt who hit a two-run double to right off Brandon Haston who was one of four lefties the Tigers threw on the mound.
The Tigers scored three in the fourth but that was immediately answered by the Privateers' three-run fourth inning.
Miguel Useche hit a bases clearing double to up the score to 16-4.
LeBlanc threw three innings in his return to the mound. He had not pitched since Feb. 25.
Brooks Byers gave up one run in two innings of relief.
Ryan Delorbe threw two scoreless frames and now sports a .132 opponent batting average on the season.
INSIDE THE BOX
The Privateers collected 17 hits. Sanford had a double with three RBI, three runs and an outfield assist.
Issac Williams went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.
Diego Villescas was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Useche had two hits and four RBI.
Dylan Mach and
Bryce Calloway each had two hits.
Joseph Eichelberger was 1-for-4 with a home run for Jackson State. Sebastian Cabeza was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Jordan McCladdie had two hits and a run.
