Barendse Scores Singles Win, Privateers Fall to Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team contested several matches and Laurie Barendse scored a win over a former Conference Player of the Year in a 6-1 loss to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday afternoon.

The ladies put up a battle on several courts and Barendse won her singles match but the Islanders prevailed on the day as they won two other singles matches that went three sets on Saturday afternoon.

Barendse closed out the day with a strong win against 2022 Southland Player of the Year, Aucagne. After winning the first set by a double break, Aucagne won the second set. Barendse won the third set 11-9 to take the Privateers' point on the day.

In doubles, Barendse and Ksenia Reznitskaya kept their undefeated record intact at flight two. The duo continued to flex their muscle as they won their match 6-4 against the Islanders' tandem of Ana Veroux and Palina Saulevich.

However, the Islanders took the remaining doubles matches to win the first point of the day. Emma Aucagne and Naomi Moi McKenzie won 6-2 at flight one. Valeria Cherfus and Kateryna Rublevska won their match 6-3 at flight three.

In singles, the Islanders won the even number flights to wrap up the match in their favor. McKenzie won 6-1, 6-0 at flight two. Cherfus won 6-0, 6-2 at flight four. Saulevich scored a 6-0, 6-3 victory at flight six.

The remaining singles matches were hotly contested. Veroux and Tristanne Dechoux went at each other through three sets but it was Veroux who held on 10-6 in the super tiebreak to win her match.

Reznitskaya won a second set tiebreaker against Rublevska to push her match to a third set but it was Rublevska who prevailed in the race to 10 points.
