NEW ORLEANS –
Grant Edwards bounced back from a rocky first inning and
Ryan Delorbe threw four shutout innings in relief but the UIW Cardinals made a pair of early runs hold as they defeated the New Orleans Privateers 2-0 on Friday night at Maestri Field.
The first four Cardinals reached base in the top of the first. Cameron Caley singled through the left side to lead off. After Grant Randall was hit by a pitch, Dalton Beck hit one of two doubles on the night to drive in the first run. Three batters later, Sterling Sutcliffe dumped a single into right field that scored the second run of the opening frame.
Edwards used one of two double plays behind him to get out of the jam without any further damage incurred. From then on, Edwards allowed four hits over the next four innings and struck out eight. He had nine total strikeouts in five innings on the mound.
The Privateers began their night at the plate when
Issac Williams lined a single to center. However, Josh Salinas kept the traffic minimal throughout the night as he allowed just three hits. Only once did a Privateer advance into scoring position on the game. That was when
Bryce Calloway singled in the fourth and stole second later in the frame.
Salinas came back out to finish the game and he had to get through
Victor Castillo,
Mitchell Sanford and
Miguel Useche. But it was Salinas who won the night as he needed just seven pitches to close the door.
It was the first time the Privateers were shut out in a Southland game since the opening round of the Southland Tournament against McNeese on May 26, 2021.
