TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Miguel Useche collected four hits and the New Orleans Privateers had a mid-inning surge but fell 15-7 to the Florida State Seminoles on Saturday night at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.
Florida State jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. The Seminoles scored a run in the first inning when James Tibbs doubled to left field. Cam Smith scored on the play to give the home team the early lead. They added six runs in the second inning to push the advantage to seven.
Grant Edwards settled into a groove after that and the Privateer offense went to work. New Orleans broke through on the scoreboard with a three-run third inning. One of Useche's four hits brought in
Diego Villescas for the first run.
Victor Castillo followed later in the inning with a two-run single that went up the middle.
The Privateers scored two more in the fourth and one in the sixth. The fourth inning saw
Mitchell Sanford rip a double to the right-center gap that cut the Seminoles lead to 7-5.
Alexander Saunier's double to left-center brought the Privateers within a run.
However, Florida State extended again and pulled away with two runs in the sixth and six more in the seventh. Jaime Ferrer and Cam Smith both hit home runs in that stretch.
Edwards finished his night by retiring the last 10 batters he faced. He went five innings and struck out four batters with no walks in 91 pitches.
