BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar Cardinals won out after a fierce battle in doubles as they defeated the New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team 5-2 in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
Marcel Volz and
Luke Joujan put together a dominant performance in their first conference match at flight one this season. Volz and Joujan won 6-1 over Max Amling and Leon Nickel. Lamar then got a 6-3 victory at flight three.
It all came down to flight two for the first point of the day.
Matthew Armbruster and
Sergi Tintore were in a ferocious battle with Brandon Do and Martin Garcia-Ripoll that went to a tiebreak. Lamar's tandem won out 8-6 in the tiebreak to gain the first point of the day.
The Cardinals vaulted ahead 3-0 after picking up the first two singles matches to finish. Amling won 6-1, 6-1 and Haruki Omori-Cowie picked up a 7-5, 6-1 victory at flight six.
Do finished the job for Lamar as he earned the fourth point by scoring a 6-2, 6-2 win at flight four to give the Cardinals a third place finish in the Southland standings.
New Orleans got points from Volz and
Joseph Townes. At flight one, Volz gutted out two tough sets to defeat Garcia-Ripoll 7-5, 7-5. Townes won a first set tiebreak 7-6 (5) and defeated Joan Crespo 6-3 in the second set to pick up the second point of the day for the Privateers.
The day finished with a three-set battle that went to 10-point super tiebreak. Nickel won 10-6 to cap off a rally from down a set.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will head to the Southland Tournament in San Antonio next week. Opponent and seed are to be determined.
