NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers pounced for seven runs in the first two innings and coasted to a 13-3 victory to complete the two-game season sweep over the South Alabama Jaguars on Tuesday night at Maestri Field.
The win was the sixth in a run rule for the Privateers this season and the first time South Alabama has suffered a run rule defeat since May 2022 (at Coastal Carolina). It also marks the first time the Privateers have won at least three straight against the Jaguars since 2007-08 when the Privateers won four straight games.
It started at the outset against South Alabama starter, Cade Carlson.
Issac Williams got on top of a high fastball and drove it to left for a double. Then
Victor Castillo drilled a two-run homer on a 3-2 pitch, his fifth long ball of the season. That came after an efficient first inning on the mound for
Tyler LeBlanc where he retired the side in order on 12 pitches.
The Jaguars got a run in on a homer by Ethan Melton to lead off the second. LeBlanc recovered to get through the rest of the frame without further damage and the Privateer offense went back to work.
Diego Villescas had one of two extra base hits on the night when he blasted his second home run of the year.
Mitchell Sanford had an RBI double and
Alexander Saunier drove in two runs with a single.
Bryce Calloway also got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to help extend the Privateer lead to 7-1.
South Alabama scored a run each in the third and the sixth to close the gap but the Privateers dealt the knockout punch in the bottom of the sixth inning. New Orleans plated six runs on just three hits. Jaguar pitchers were collectively responsible for three walks and two wild pitches in the frame. There was also a passed ball and an error.
Villescas capped the scoring with a two-run triple into the gap in right-center that plated
Maika Niu and Saunier to push the Privateer lead to double digits.
INSIDE THE BOX
Jack Williams picked up his second consecutive midweek win after three shutout innings. Castillo and
Miguel Useche combined for four walks and five runs scored. Issac had three hits, two of which were infield singles. Defensively, the Privateers turned two double plays.
Ryan Delorbe struck out the side in the seventh to complete the shortened game.
Brennan Holt was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. John Michael Gillis and Eric Lin combined for three shutout innings with six strikeouts.
