JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State Tigers scored in each of the first five innings as they defeated the New Orleans Privateers 10-3 on Tuesday night at Braddy Field. With the win, the two teams split the two-game season series.
The Privateers got a runner into scoring position in each of the first three innings but could not break through against Jackson State starter, Christian Womble nor Stevins Spurgeon Jr. who got the win in relief.
Meanwhile, the Tigers put up four runs in the opening frame. They collected six hits and executed two squeeze bunts that scored runs. One of them also resulted in a bunt single from the bat of Robert Tate.
Joseph Eichelberger singled in a run with two outs in the second to make the score 5-0. From there, the Tigers got their next four runs without the benefit of a hit.
New Orleans got on the scoreboard in the fifth. After
Dalton Hurst and
Alexander Saunier each had base hits,
Diego Villescas hit a ball on the left side of the infield that got through via a fielding error on Tate. However, the Tigers avoided further damage as Spurgeon retired the next three batters in order.
The Privateers plated two runs in the seventh. After
Mitchell Sanford tripled for his second extra base hit of the night,
Miguel Useche drove him in on a sac fly. Three batters later, a sac fly from
Andrew Guidry brought in
Maika Niu.
The Jackson State pitching staff racked up 14 strikeouts which helped offset the eight walks surrendered. Isaiah Williams shut down the game with two scoreless innings and five strikeouts.
